Ammunition, Cartridge for Handguns

Over the years I have noticed the effect Ammunition has on my shooting. From the budget box of 500 .22 Cal. with varying weights, inaccuracy and misfires (they're good enough for plinking) to the twenty dollar a box of fifty 22 Cal. high end stuff. I've figured out that AMMO matters.

A cartridge is made up of four major components, Bullet, Case, Powder and Primmer each being real important to the success of THE SHOT. From copper jacketed to solid copper, frangible, hollow point, ballistic tipped, boat-tailed on and on, bullets have become a science all in their own. Cases, consistency of head and wall thickness combined with ever evolving metallurgy equal quality brass cases. Gun powder companies manufacture an ever widening variety of powder. I use three different manufactures of large pistol primers for reloading and never had a misfire. Why three different manufactures? Availability. Nowadays manufacturers of ammo produce excellent components that result in predictable cartridges designed for specific purposes. A Factory Round can be picked up at the local Gun Shop for just about any set of circumstances you can imagine.

Ho! What about, Lead Ammo. Well, I have been shooting for a long, long time. I reload thousands of big old lead bullets for cowboy shooting. Occasionally, during an Ammunition reloading frenzy, I have popped a cheese doodle or 24 into my mouth without washing my lead soaked fingers and when alone at the indoor range I don't us the fan. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE HIGHLY UNSAFE PRACTICES. My blood-work came back after my last physical and the level of lead in my blood was lower than the low limit- go figure.

Cartridges by themselves are highly collectable and most shooters are whether they realize it or not, collectors. Generally speaking, we all have a box of loose strange old cartridges stuck away somewhere, I know I do. In my box a couple of-em have vegetable gardens growing on-em. Old boxes, empty, full and unopened have a grading scale as tough as in coin collecting. Prices of hard to find boxes are rising to the level of Gold Coin. Ammunition is becoming an every winding field of interest year.
