Cowboy Shooting,
How did I Get there ?

Ever wonder what was the most influential motivation in the games you played as a kid? Cowboys and indians, we called it Cowboys and Bad guys. I was never sure where the motivation for Cowboys and Bad guys came from. What was the influence, Movies, TV. or the neighborhood? The bunch I palled around with would go to the Saturday matinee, a double feature for 20 cents. After the show, on the way home we would pick-up the guys that couldn't put the 20 cents together and by the time we arrived back "on the block" we would have all figured out who were going to be Bank Robbers and who Cowboys. The Sheriff, that pick, occasionally erupted in a, "how many times that so and so had been Sheriff." Lets call it a discussion. I could go on about hangings that went almost bad, but not this time.

One member of the group, had two brothers that were "connected" and I don't mean siamese twins. One of them went away on a 3 to 5 year "business trip" that he came home early from. The organization he worked for must have been pleased with his results is they promoted him to "Captain". The other brother was placed on his "Crew". May-be they worked for the airlines? Another member's father, an accountant, did 5-10 at Sing Sing on the Hudson. What that was all about, I forget. For myself, I just loved GUNS any kind and I loved taking them apart as much as shooting them. How I didn't turn out to be a gunsmith, I don't know. Sometimes I think I am. Thank heaven, not too often.

The Movies had The Duke, Randolph Scott Allen Lad and TV. had Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger and Sky King. Cowboy entertainment abounded. Did all that influence us, you bet. We would play cowboys and bad-guys all day long taking turns holding up the bank and shooting our way out of town cap guns just smoking.

Let's jump forward to the day when I was talking to a friend about shooting and he says "you got to get in to cowboy shooting." I laughed saying, "I don't know were my cap guns are". He says "no! really, we dress-up like cowboys and use real guns." That was enough for me I signed-up. My cowboy alias is Quick Z, my friend, is known as "Smiling John". Cowboy shooters come from a wide range. At a Cowboy shooting match you'll find folk from all walks of life. From Senators to the old Vet living at the home who uses other folks equipment because he can't afford guns and ammo. A great bunch of family friendly folks. You see grandparents that bring the grand and even great grand children to matches. At matches everybody competes, plumbers, carpenters and lawyers. Matches are good situations for single people. I've read about cowboy and girl weddings in the cowboy orientated media all the time. Shooters getting together to have fun. Sure there's a bit-ah competition, sometimes a-lot, but all in good SAFE fun. Cowboy shooting is one of the fastest growing shooting activities, world wide. You should check it out.
